A spirometer is a medical device used to measure how well a person’s lungs are working. It checks the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air a person can inhale and exhale. It is widely used in diagnosing and monitoring respiratory conditions such as Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and Pulmonary Fibrosis.

🔍 Types of Spirometers

  • Incentive spirometer – encourages deep breathing (commonly used after surgery)
  • Diagnostic spirometer – used in hospitals/clinics for lung function testing
  • Digital/portable spirometer – used in clinics or at home for monitoring

🫁 What a Spirometer Measures

  • Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) – total air exhaled forcefully
  • Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV₁) – air exhaled in the first second
  • Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) – fastest airflow during exhalation

📋 Uses of a Spirometer

  1. Diagnosis of lung diseases
  2. Monitoring chronic respiratory conditions
  3. Pre-operative assessment (before surgery)
  4. Post-operative lung recovery (especially with incentive spirometer)
  5. Occupational health screening (e.g., workers exposed to dust/chemicals)

🧾 Step-by-Step Usage Instructions

✔️ General Use (Diagnostic Spirometer)

  1. Prepare the device
    • Ensure it is clean and calibrated
    • Attach a new disposable mouthpiece
  2. Position the patient
    • Sit upright or stand
    • Loosen tight clothing
  3. Seal lips around mouthpiece
    • No air should leak
  4. Inhale deeply
    • Take the deepest breath possible
  5. Exhale forcefully and quickly
    • Blow out as hard and fast as possible
    • Continue until lungs feel completely empty
  6. Repeat test
    • Usually done 3 times for accuracy
    • Best result is recorded

✔️ Incentive Spirometer (for patients)

  1. Sit upright
  2. Hold the device upright
  3. Exhale normally
  4. Place mouthpiece in mouth and seal lips
  5. Inhale slowly and deeply (raise the indicator/ball)
  6. Hold breath for 3–5 seconds
  7. Remove mouthpiece and exhale
  8. Repeat 10–15 times every hour (as prescribed)

⚠️ Important Tips

  • Avoid eating heavy meals before testing
  • Do not smoke before the test
  • Follow technician/doctor instructions carefully
  • Use disposable mouthpieces to prevent infection
