- HIV Rapid Test:
- This is the most common type of self-test.
- It requires a small blood sample, usually obtained by pricking the finger with a lancet.
- The sample is applied to a test stick or test strip.
- Results are generally available within 15-30 minutes.
Understanding the Results:
- Reactive/Positive: Indicates the presence of HIV antibodies. It does NOT confirm an HIV diagnosis. A follow-up confirmatory test is essential.
- Non-reactive/Negative: Indicates no detection of HIV antibodies. If exposure was recent (within the last 3 months), the result might be a false negative because the body hasn’t produced enough antibodies yet. It’s recommended to test again after some time to be sure.
- Invalid: Sometimes, the test might not work correctly and will produce no result or an unclear result. In such cases, the test should be repeated with a new kit.
Advantages of HIV Self-Test Kits:
- Privacy: Allows for testing in the privacy of one’s home.
- Convenience: No need to schedule a clinic or doctor visit.
- Quick results: Most tests provide results in under 30 minutes.
